Who is this Bill Mann anyway?

After finishing a PhD in Computer Science at Carnegie-Mellon University, I went to Information Sciences Institute at USC near Los Angeles. I spent more than 15 years there doing and managing research on computers and language, with a major focus on generating text and on developing the discourse linguistics necessary to tell a computer how to generate texts. There was prior work on the structure of dialogue.

As a side activity I worked with Dr. David Weber of Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL), developing field methods for adapting text from one language to another. In 1990 I took early retirement and joined SIL, teaching the adaptation programs on site in Africa until 1996.

These days my working time is divided between various interests in discourse linguistics.

For a list of older publications (1999 and earlier) with some linguistic connection: publication list

Recent (2000 and later) memos, submissions and publications (except the ones on dialogue) are found in: Recent writings.

There is also a File Exchange Annex A place where Bill exchanges files with people .
